CENTRE FOR EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT ( CECODE) P.O BOX 177 KASESE- UGANDA TEL.+256 777743171 EMAIL: cecode06@yahoo.co.uk Dear Partners in development, Greetings from CECODE. SUBMISSION OF AN APPLICATION FOR FUNDING WORTH US$ 18097.56 FOR IMPLEMENTATION OF A LAUNDRY SOAP PROJECT Kindly receive our application for funding from CECODE Centre for education and community development (CECODE) is Community based Organization (CBO) operating in Kasese district. It was formed in 2006. Its areas of expertise are: • Training in appropriate technology. • Using modern agriculture technology to boost food production • Biodiversity conservation. • Income generating projects that help women. VISION OF THE ORGANISATION Working with an informed community that mobilizes local resources available for sustainable development. OBJECTIVES OF THE ORGANISATION: • Empowering rural farmers with skills and knowledge to boost the food supply chain. • To create awareness about the need to protect and conserve the environment. • To use local resources that are within reach to develop projects that foster development • To give knowledge and skills in appropriate technology to other organized community based group THE LAUNDRY SOAP PROJECT: CECODE is requesting financial support in order to implement a laundry soap project that is projected to cost US dollar 15000. The organization is doing this an effort to empower women in Kasese town council Kasese district in line with one of areas of expertise. The project is viable and feasible given the abundance of raw materials like sodium Hydroxide, palm oil, boiling pans, moulds and others used to produce soap which are readily available and within reach. Kasese District, the neighboring Bundibugyo district and DR Congo are all famous for the production of first class quality palm oil one of the major raw materials that we are going to use to produce laundry soap at a local level. The high production of oil makes it affordable to buy and therefore a survey we carried out indicate that local soap the organization is going to produce will be affordable to all because oil is readily available at a good price and fuel wood will be used for heating instead of electricity which is expensive and very costly which forces modern soap manufactures to hike the price of their products(soap) we shall take advantage of this and produce soap at an affordable cost. We have our own wood lot plantation, therefore this project will not degrade the environment thru change of ecosystem by cutting down trees for fuel wood. The survey indicate that a bar of soap cost 2500 Uganda shillings equivalent 1.2 US Dollars. We hope to produce an affordable soap that will costv1900 Uganda shillings the same bar equivalent to 0.9US Dollars. PROJECT DESCRIPTION: To produce soap, heat palm oil until it is runny liquid and filter it into a clay pot or bowl. Pour cold water (measured volume) into a plastic container and then add sodium hydroxide with great care. When all the sodium hydroxide has been added stir well, soap slowly turns pulpy at this stage. Just before the soap texture becomes too solid to pour, pour the soap into metallic fabricated metal mould or wooden mould made to the size of commercial soap in form of bars. Leave the soap to dry in a shady place for 2or 3 months until the chemical reaction that produce soap has completely come to an end. After this stage soap is ready for use or for sell. OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT: • To empower the rural women economically thru the sale of the produced soap by giving a revolving credit fund with a small interest to members of the organization especially women. • To create employment for some few members of the organization. • To train members of our organization in soap production technology a skill members can use at an individual level to produce soap and boost their income base. • To solve the problem of ever-skyrocketing prices of soap due to high power costs involved in its production. • To show the community that the oil they produce and sell to soap manufactures which they use to manufacture soap and again sell it to them at a very expensive price is one of the major components in soap production THE PROJECT MANAGEMENT TEAM: The management of the project will be done by the project management team Which is the executive board of the implementing organization The team will involve the following; • The director of the implementing organization • The coordinator. • The treasurer. • The Secretary. THE PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION COMMITTEE: The implementation of the project will be done by the same team in partnership with the local community • The director of the implementing organization • The coordinator. • The treasurer. • The Secretary. • 1Technical expert personnel The local community will sell the oil they produce from their gardens to the organization which is one of the raw materials used in soap production.. BENEFICIARIES: The project is aimed to benefit the local community, members of the organization and other organized groups who will use the theoretical skills acquired during trainings into practical lessons, who are facing the problem of high soap costs SUSTAINABILITY OF THE PROJECT: The sustainability of this project will depend on the following: • Sales from the organization wood lot plantation. • Support from people of good will • Sales from the organization poultry farm project. • Small profits accruing from small loans given to members of the organization after selling the produced soap will be re invested back into the project to keep it moving even after donor funds are spent. • Fundraising drives. • Keeping proper books of accounts, ensuring each coin is spent in line with the planned activities in the budget. MONITORING AND EVALUATION: Monitoring and evaluation of the project activities will be done by the project implementation team. It will monitor the progress of the project right a way from the beginning up to the end of the project period.
