Full Description (Required)
SUMMARY Teachers today are always looking to easily increase their teaching skills. As students become more aware of the importance of how they think, they become more engaged in classroom work. An engaged student is a student with a learning opportunity. The purpose of this effort is to provide high school teachers with an easy-to-understand source of reference material to assist them in incorporating activities that foster critical thinking into their daily lesson plans. This material will be based on National Curriculum Standards so that teachers will be following acceptable procedures when using this material. BACKGROUND My work experience includes project management work with Fortune 500 companies and teaching high school science at an inner city school. I have obtained a Masters in Education and Curriculum. My classroom lessons and teaching style turned problem students into engaged learners. I also began an after school club that focused on helping the environment. This club was so successful that other clubs began using our ideas and strategies. We were the first club on campus, which didn’t have a sports event, and was able to generate donations from local businesses. PLAN A. Build I will write the material that will be published as a pdf, Adobe Acrobat, file. The following is the proposed Table of Contents: 1. Critical Thinking 101 - Curriculum characteristics - Classroom characteristics - Teacher characteristics 2. Lesson Plan Elements - Matrixed lessons - steering students - Critical thinking generator tool - Measuring curriculum tool 3. Driving Lessons with Metacognition - Uncover lesson objectives - Strategies for assessment - Sample lesson time line - Sample collaboration project 4. 30-Day Improvement Plan 5. Web Resources 6. Professional Development Follow Up B. Roll Out After I have completed the Educator Guide to Instill Learner Critical Thinking Skills then I will publish it to teacher groups on the web: National Science Teachers Association, National Council of Teachers of English, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and teacher groups that are State-based. This material will be free to educators and they will be able to save the file and print it. C. Follow Up I will provide forms in the material for teachers to complete. These forms will document what the teachers did to improve their teaching skills and to improve student critical thinking skills. The teachers who complete the forms will receive from me a certificate of Professional Development Achievement in Critical Thinking for 20 hours. They can use this Certificate to satisfy the continuing education hours they need to renew their teaching certificates. SCHEDULE Once this project is funded it will take me about 30 days to write this material. I will then begin to distribute it to teacher groups and post it on web sites. Within 45 days of being funded this material will be distributed freely to educators and be available thereafter at certain websites. As teachers respond to me with the Professional Development forms I will complete certificates and mail them out as requested.
