Full Description (Required)
Shorecombers is a global edutainment company built on a core study program of watershed planning, clean water advocacy, and community engagement in service of clean water. The target audience is engaged in some form of water dependent activity such as bird watching, kayaking, surfing, or just living on the river or coastline. These are the front line community leaders self-organizing to keep our water clean. And there are well over one million of them.
The clean water industry (estimated in 2009 at $312 billion in the US) is mainly in the hands of the scientific community, governmental agencies, and large engineering firms. This market is focused on areas such as: municipal waste water, stormwater, non-point source water pollution, marine debris, wetlands mitigation, invasive species, habitat restoration, and floodplain management. Small grassroots organizations are most active in the areas of marine debris and stormwater runoff. Because you may need to be an expert to find an invasive species or to manage a wastewater facility, but you can quickly learn to track the soda cans and Styrofoam coffee cups back to their origins on land in the watershed.
Clean water training for small ad hoc organizations is sporadic and mainly dedicated to managing annual shoreline cleanups. This grossly underestimates the needs and abilities of these leaders. Shorecombers proposes to build a series of dynamic online facilitator led courses, travel excursions and media materials aimed at this market of front line volunteers who are dedicated to saving their piece of paradise be it a beach, river, creek, lake or wetland. We aim to answer the often asked question: “How can I make the biggest difference?” While these ad hoc cleanup organizations are learning planning and community engagement; they will also be strengthening their skills in group leadership, advocacy, public speaking, and strategic planning.
Recent developments in combining webinars, teleconferences, virtual communities and solid training programs have brought a global classroom into our living rooms. In 2014, Inc Magazine had four e-Learning Community ventures in its List of Fastest Growing Companies. Gross profits for these firms ranged from $2.5 to $11 million. Staff ranged from 5-40 employees.
Shorecombers was founded by BJ Smith a social entrepreneur, federal grant and program administrator, and media producer. She is joined by Kat Byles, international marketing; Susan Chamberlain, community and watershed planning; and Karen Heuvel, project, media and event management. BJ Smith is the firm’s Master Trainer/Coach, Tour developer and Media Host/Producer. We will lead a flexible global team of coaches, technology managers and subject matter experts in growing an engaged global community of clean water advocates. Shorecombers is a virtual business with no brick & mortar offices.
Shorecombers will operate as a Public Benefit Corporation with B-Corp certification. This is a for-profit business building shareholder wealth and investing in a community of local clean water organizations. Ivestment opportunities are now available for gifted, connected angel investors who know we can have a clean ocean and an end to marine litter pollution by supporting and growing the worldwide movement of local clean water organizations and a clean water consumer market.
